SASCOC MOURNS POWERBOATING TRAGEDY
- Updated: June 12, 2018
SASCOC has noted with great sadness the loss of yet another prominent South African sportsman at the weekend.
Following the passing of Commonwealth Games wrestler Kleinjan Combrinck and the serious injury of fellow wrestler Michael Gaitskill in Gauteng in a car crash at the weekend, power boating pilot Wayne Gerber lost his life in a racing incident at Lochvaal, Vanderbijlpark.
Gerber was competing in Powerboat South Africa’s Inflatable modified class at the 23rd Ice Block Championships .
Despite all efforts by the rescue and medical teams Gerber passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
The event was immediately cancelled and an official investigation is being conducted.
Speaking of Gerber’s passing, SASCOC President Gideon Sam said: This is indeed a dark week for South African sport. Each and every sportsman and woman in the SA sporting family is equally precious.
‘We at SASCOC reach out to Wayne’s family at this dreadful time and send them strength as they deal with their loss.’
