The Africa Youth Games recently held in Algers, Algeria gave the country a wonderful opportunity to see what we can hope to expect at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

We  saw some great performances against the best in Africa and now our focus now shifts to Argentina for the Youth Olympic Games.

Team South Africa did not perform well in the last edition of these Games in Nanjing getting only one gold medal from hurdler Gezelle Magerman.

We like to put this down to the fact that Team SA were overwhelmed by the occasion and this time around we believe we are ready to take on the best in the Olympic Movement.

Watch this space when we report back on great performances by our athletes.

Meanwhile preparations for Tokyo are in full swing and the many National Federations are assisting potential medallists embark on the international circuit for serious competition. We know that this phase of the athlete’s preparation is crucial for podium positions in Tokyo.

Our quest to find countries to partner with for training facilities continues unabated. We are aware of the squeeze on resources but are determined to assist deserving athletes. We do this in the belief that we can do better than in Rio in both the Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Thanks to the support of the Department of Sport Recreation South Africa and the National Lotteries Commission we are able to keep Operation Excellence alive, enabling us to support the athletes in their preparation.

Add to this the generous contributions from Olympic Solidarity and two sponsors Toyota and Citibank for our para-athletes.

We continue to look for solutions around governance issues that creep up every now and then amongst our National Federations.

At the level of the Confederation we still await the outcome of the Committee of Enquiry instituted by former Minister Thulas Nxesi. The results of the Enquiry can only make sport operate better when we all know where exactly we fall short.
